The sixth season of the Lanka Premier League, Sri Lanka’s franchise Twenty20 cricket tournament, will take place in the summer of 2026. Cricket and sports fans alike are eagerly awaiting July 17. Over the course of 23 days, five teams compete for the Lanka Premier League title, with matches taking place at four stadiums. The tournament brings together the country’s leading franchises and concludes with the Final on August 8, 2026.

What Is the Lanka Premier League 2026

The Lanka Premier League will once again bring spectators back to the stands. After the 2025 edition was canceled, many fans have been eagerly waiting for its return. The tournament is played in the T20 format. It is organized by Sri Lanka Cricket, while IPG Group holds the event rights. Several franchises will compete in the sixth edition under new names or new corporate ownership. But these are not the only changes.

The U-23 requirement and the new Impact Player rule will have the biggest effect on the upcoming tournament. Every team must now include at least one player under the age of 23 in its starting XI. An under-23 player must also remain in the playing XI after an Impact Player substitution. The new rules will give captains more to think about. They will need to maintain the right balance between experience and promising young players.

The LPL is actively expanding its presence on the international stage. Thus, T20 legend Chris Gayle has become the tournament’s ambassador. The former West Indies cricket star is expected to attract more attention to the upcoming event. LPL 2026 Full Match Schedule (July 17 – August 8)

The 2026 Lanka Premier League tournament lasts just over three weeks. We will be able to follow the action from July 17 to August 8. The competition uses a double round-robin format where each of the five teams plays every other team twice. Every win in this T20 format awards a team two points in the points table, while a loss results in zero points, with one point awarded to each team in case of a tie or no result. All 20 of the league-stage fixtures will be concluded on August 2nd. Two rest days separate the final league match on August 2 from the playoffs beginning on August 5.

The opening match of this year's LPL takes place at the SSC in Colombo on July 17th, with defending champions Jaffna Kings facing the newly named Galle Gallants.

Playoff Format Explained

The regular season comes to a close with a four-team Page playoff to decide the best team in the league. Finishing in the top two will also come with an added benefit – it gives each side a huge safety net – meaning a single loss in the opening playoff game will not eliminate them from the tournament. 

The road to the trophy looks like this:

• Qualifier 1 – the #1 and #2 seeds face off. The winner advances directly to the Final, while the loser drops to Qualifier 2 for a second chance.

• Eliminator – The third- and fourth-placed teams play a knockout match. The losing team is eliminated, while the winner advances to Qualifier 2.

• Qualifier 2 – the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner from the Eliminator square off. The prize is the last open spot in the Final.

• Final – the championship match where the two remaining teams compete for the LPL title.

Teams and Squads Overview

This will be the sixth season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), featuring five teams with freshly overhauled rosters, while several franchises will even see a change in their ownership following the recent player draft. • Kandy Royals. With a new look – including a fresh logo and jersey – for the sixth edition of the LPL, the Kandy Royals are beginning a new era. Built around the experience and class of global stars like Moeen Ali (a highly experienced English all-rounder and World Cup winner) and Vijay Shankar (a reliable Indian all-rounder with extensive top-flight domestic and international credentials), the team aims to be highly competitive in the upcoming season.

• Dambulla Sixers. A team with serious intentions, the Dambulla Sixers are back. Having fixed past tactical issues at the draft table, this squad comprises seasoned pros adept at performing under the highest pressure.

• Colombo Kaps. The team is all set to embark on a fresh journey after the takeover by Witness Sports Alliance LLC. They face the challenging task of building their squad during the draft and making their presence felt this season.

Venues Guide

The 2026 Lanka Premier League will involve a variety of stadiums with different pitch and weather characteristics from Sri Lanka's premier cricket destinations.
